We are transitioning from agents that suggest text to agents that perform complex sequences of tasks. But here is the hard truth: and AI agent with a loose, unstructured prompt is a chaotic employee. It will work 80% of the time, and fail in spectacularly creative ways the other 20%.
In real-world engineering, reliability is not optional. To build autonomous agents that actually solve business problems, we have to stop thinking about "prompts" and start thinking about Workflow Orchestration.
Section 1: The Brittle Logic of the Long Prompt
The most common mistake I see is the "Mega-Prompt." An engineer tries to cram 50 different instructions into a single system message: "If X happens do Y, but if Z happens do A, and always remember to B."

One of the biggest challenges in building autonomous agents is State. If an agent is performing a 10-step process over 5 minutes, where is that state stored?
In production, you cannot rely on the LLM's "context window" to maintain state. It is too expensive and too prone to "middle-of-the-document" forgetfulness.
- External State: Store the agent's goal, history, and current findings in a database (Postgres/Redis).
- Deterministic Flow: Use a finite state machine (FSM) to dictate which "thoughts" are valid at which stage. For example, an agent shouldn't be allowed to "Confirm Purchase" until it has successfully "Validated Inventory."

The agent gathers the data, proposes the action, and waits for a human click before proceeding.
Designing an agent without an "Undo" or a "Pause" button isn't engineering; it's a liability.
